Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 using a partitioned HD
by Guest svbandanaman- 0 replies
I'm planning on upgrading my Windows XP computer to Windows 7. Reading the tutorials on how to do this, I see the preferred method is to use the Windows Easy Transfer software. However, when using this it says that I must transfer settings/files to an external location. My question is: My XP computer HD has two partitions, one XP plus and one for media, picture files etc. Is it possible to transfer the computer's settings/files to the second partition on my HD without having to use an external source? by Guest moshark- 0 replies

i have spent like eight hours trying to activate my office small and business 2010 having spoken to a number of people who have transferred the buck to the next person. I bought the physical cd 2007 version first, with a sticker on the package promoting a free update to the the 2010 version when it is released. I had a nightmare going through Digital river to activate this upgrade at the time in 2010. Now i have reformatted my computer, contacted Microsoft who told me to contact Digital river, who have a voice message to contact Microsoft. Now we do have a the Trade Practices act which have laws protected consumers against companies who do not fulfill their undertakin…

Hi all, at the moment, i am about to deploy Office 2010 to approx 180 PCs. All of them have Office 2003/SP3 installed. The Problem now is: Some of the workstations work fine, some more fail with normal problems (homemade) and many fail with error 30066 ... Now i googled and found that i should have to run listool.exe /q remove=all on all PCs that i want to deploy to .... The execution of the tool works fine (exit code 0) but the installation of office 2010 still fails on many of the pcs ... Any suggestions for me, where i can look further ? Kind regards, Markus Continue reading...

I need to know this since windows thinks that my monitor gets unplugged when I turn it off and use displayport (DP) as a media to transfer the image. This will be a big issue for windows if its not fixed soon since DP more or less always registers as "unplugged" when the monitor is off. Any1 know a solution to this problem? its bad when u need to change the resolution back to normal each time you start the computer and forgett to start one of the monitors... Continue reading...

Adding a favorite causes IE9 to lock up, and shows 2 IE's running in Task Manager.
by Guest flnettles- 0 replies
This is a new problem, everything was fine until 48 hrs ago. When I try to add a favorite site, instead of getting the add favorite popup, IE9 locks up. Clicking anywhere get the default beep. I can not close the window, or open another window. When I bring up Task Manager to manually close the site, it shows 2 instances of the site running. (any site does this). I have to close one or both IE windows and reopen IE9. I can access existing favorites, but can not add. I have my favorites saved on a seperate drive (previous C drive, now E drive) and tried deleting favorites on the C drive and copying the favorites file into Users in case the favorites file had become corrupt…

Windows 7 Pro 64 bit - WIA service won't stay "on"
by Guest HoibO- 0 replies

I have to install a Brother AIO printer/scanner using a network connection. Using a brand new Acer Veriton X275 with 4gB RAM, new HDD, built in graphics card. The printer driver went in, it prints. The scanner though isn't working. Brother (the AIO manufacturer) looked at it and said the "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Service" is broken and you need to get that fixed first. When we investigated it, the service is set to "Auto" but remains stopped. We can go to the service and "Start" it but 15-20 seconds later it's stopped with no error or any other symptom. The two dependencies (RPC & Shell Hardware Detect) are already confirmed on and running. Since we ju…

Microsoft hasn’t been shy about the radical direction it’s taking with the user interface design on Windows 8, but it looks like their latest change may be a big one. PCBeta reports that the latest build of Microsoft’s next operating system does away with the ubiquitous “Start” button, which has graced Windows for almost twenty years. The functionality of the Start button remains, but as a limited “hotspot” in the lower-left corner by default, not unlike the Aero Peek feature in Windows 7. Even that functionality is only present in the classic or desktop mode, which drops the shiny new Metro tile interface for a more traditional windowed UI. The 8220 build of Windows 8…

If you have a spare hard drive lying around, this process is pretty easy: Download the appropriate Windows 8 ISO from the Microsoft Developer Network site, burn it to a DVD, turn off your PC, slap the hard drive in your case, and connect it up to your motherboard. Then just turn your system on and either press the key that allows you to access your motherboard's boot menu or change the boot options in the BIOS so your optical drive is recognized before your main hard drive you should then be booting off your new Windows 8 disk. From there, just fire up the Windows 8 installer and install the operating system to your new drive. Source: PC World

Microsoft says Windows 8 will make its OS updates less annoying, limiting restarts to once a month. But system reboots are still often necessary--namely when a file that needs updating is open at the time. Updates offer a tenuous trade-off, providing more security and reliability, but forcing you to spend time to reboot--or worse yet, causing you to lose work during an automatic reboot. The best way to prevent the problems is to eliminate the need for a restart at all. However, Microsoft says Windows 8 will at least boot faster. Source: PC World

Microsoft today detailed the Windows update mechanism in Windows 8. Usually we will get notifications from Windows that an update is available, once we click to install it, it will ask for restart after some process. If we postpone it, it will remind us after some time, we have to deal with it every time. In Windows 8, Microsoft has streamlined the experience which will be less annoying and cumbersome. OneNote 2010 Seems Like a Hostile Takeover (or Defeat?)
by Guest BWinebarg- 0 replies
I tried the MS OneNote 2010 trial and thought the program was wonderful so I purchased OneNote 2010. It has been impossible to get it installed though. First I got errors in the installation. I reviewed the error codes in the logs and researched the codes. It appeared that I needed to uninstall the Office 2010 trial first. I uninstalled it per the KB & Fix-It and then tried to reinstall OneNote 2010. No luck. Then it appeared that maybe I needed to uninstall Office 2007 Home & Student (trial that came pre-installed on laptop) so I used the KB & Fix-It and uninstalled Office 2007. Tried to install OneNote 2010 again. Now all I get is OneNote 2010 has s…
