By Paul Thurrott Microsoft’s official Office Blogs has an interesting post about the creation of its Windows Phone app, called Office Blogs, of course. In the post, Craig Kerwien, the Director of Site Management in the Office Division Product Management Group describes how he went from idea to working app in just a few hours on a Saturday. By Paul Thurrott A decade ago, PC makers and server software makers like Oracle tried to push a concept called thin client computing on unwilling customers. But this week, the first truly brilliant thin client computing solution appeared courtesy of OnLive, which now offers free and subscription versions of a service that streams the Windows desktop--at blazing speeds--to iPad users. If memory serves, I uninstalled MSE in the last half of 2011 because it was adversely affecting the performance of my computer system. Indeed, the Windows 7 (64-bit) diagnostic fingered MSE as doing that. So I uninstalled it and began using Windows Defender, which has its own deficiencies. MSE is currently offered as "optional" by Windows Update, but it doesn't disclose the version or the date that it was released. As far as I can determine, Microsoft has not updated MSE since July 2011. When does Microsoft expect to release a new version in which the performance issues have been rectified? Maybe I should install Panda antimalware instead. Continue readi…

Where should I report an unidentified virus? While browsing the web yesterday, a blank IE window popped up on top of everything else. I identified the Window as an IE9 one, cause when I switched off the internet connection, there was the usual « page cannot be found » screen. This “ghost” window has an icon in the task bar: an old fashioned floppy diskette. The window puts itself in full screen at Windows startup, has no button or title, always stays on top of everything else, including the task manger and start menu, does not react to ALT+TAB, WIN+TAB or ALT+F4, this makes it impossible to operate Windows. CTRL+ALT+DEL would still allow me to shut down or reboot. The Wi…

I purchased your DRW-22B2S from Tiger Direct. I found it would not play DVD's using my Windows Media player. I bought a plug-in from Corel (DVDX pack), it reads the DVD for about 10 seconds then the system freezes. I am using a Dell 3000 with Windows XP. I have Windows service pack 3, Pentium 4 CPU 280 GHz. I have an upgraded memorey of 2G and a NVIDIA video card 8400GS. Is there a product that will allow me to use my Windows Media player?Do I need a new video player? What do you suggest that is compatable with the ASUS DVD Player(DRW-22B2S) and my PC? Are the Nero products able to solve this problem? Do you have a solution that will remedy this problem?Thank You . …

Hi, I have internet Explorer 9 and I used to be able to type Arabic letters on my browser using my keyboard but recently I have not been able to do so unless through the on-screen keyboard? At the same time, I have no problem using my keyboard in typing Arabic letters into a word document. So, it seems to me like there's some issue with the browser and not the operating system. Please advise. Thanks Continue reading...

Is it legal to use the license for Windows XP that I have installed on my desktop in a virtual machine on that desktop? I checked the EULA for XP, and it doesn't mention Virtual Machines. That's to be expected because VM's weren't as common when XP was released. The very next version of Windows is Vista, and it's EULA specifically says it is okay to use the OS in a virtual environment on the computer it's installed on. "You may use the software installed on the licensed device within a virtual (or otherwise emulated) hardware system." Continue reading...

My security program warned me that Internet Explorer is taking high CPU and Memory Usage. This is a new Dell Inspiron One2320, I have used it just one week. A support person from Norton tried to correct the problem by accessing my computer and going through all the steps he could think of for well over an hour. It didn't work, but he says he suspects that there are some errors in the Internet explorer 9. I don't know what to do. I just bought this computer and now I'm afraid that all the memory is going to get eaten up. Please help me. I have windows 7 Home Premium. Continue reading...

I have kind of a strange one. I've seen several of forums similar but not exact to the issue i'm having. let me give you a little background on the issue. Original Setup: 3 Windows XP Pro computers and 1 Win 7 Pro 64 bit in a small office. one of the XP pro computers was setup as a file share host where the others all mapped to it. there was an application that was installed on that computer that was run from the file share. all other hosts had mapped a drive to the file share computer and ran the application through the file share. all computers could access the program on the file share fine and there was no problems. Network layout: 1 network using DHCP, nothing fa…

When I used XP, I was able to use my Texas Instrument Microlaser Pro 600 because the OS contained the TI printer entry when I used the Add a Printer utility. When I used the utility to add a printer, the OS gave you two choices--Have Disc or choose the Model and Manufacturer from a list. TI was there. Now, with Windows 7, they removed the TI entry and I do not the the driver disc. I hate to buy another printer. Is there any workaround? If we know the location where all the drivers were stored in XP, we can copy the drivers and paste them to the corresponding location in Windows 7. It could work, but I do know the location where all the model information and driver…
