Hi there, I'm trying to deploy Office 2010 with SCCM. For some reason, unattended installation results in "There is insufficient memory or disk space. Word cannot display the requested font" This is happening on Windows 7 MVLS installed from scratch (no settings changed), with Office 2010 Professional Plus RTM bits. Windows 7 is not joined to a domain, so no GPO settings are being applied here. I'm not installing anything besides Windows 7 and Office 2010. If I upgrade from Office 2007 it will work perfectly. If I install it as a user (after SCCM installs the OS), it works as well. Even if I use the bits on my SCCM package store (the same used when performing the in…

I have read around the net about the problems people are having with the program Sims2 Bon Voyage. It seems that the program is almost continuously trying to communicate to an outside point. This is causing memory overload which is leading to other problems. I have tried going through task manager to shut down game drivers and dump.exe files that the Sims2 game has initiated but it does not help. The only answer I have is to uninstall the program. I don't know what the intent was in designing the program this way but it is not worth these issues. If your computer keeps shutting down before windows fully loads then what you do is bring up the connections controls out of co…

Hello all, Currently we have machines that have Win7 OS . There is also a backup partition made during the install. In certain cases, I need a script that will apply an already existing wim file to the backup partition. Afterwards, I need to change the active partition to the backup partition so that the machine will then boot to the newly installed OS on the backup partition. Applying the wim should be easy using imagex. I am wondering if anyone has an idea how I would change the active partition (programmatically) while still within Win7. Any ideas? Continue reading...

Hi All. I'm deploying Win 7 offline via USB key because of network constraints. I have two computer models with different aircards which require different software installed (.exe or .msi installation only, no inf). I'm looking for a script that I can add to the setup process so that once setup is finished, the script will query wmi for the computer model (such as powershell: get-wmiobject -class win32_computersystem | select model ) and then depending on which one of two models is returned, one of two applications will be installed. I could possibly call this script from setupcomplete.cmd. Does anyone know of a script I can use? Continue reading...

A while back I remember reading someplace that it was possible to move some of the program directories from c:\users\default user\appdata\roaming or local to the c:\users\public directory. The effect being when a new profile is created those directories do not need to be copied to the new profile but they are still accessible by the program because it will find them in the public directory, thus speeding up the creation of the new profile. And I remember the document went on to say you could not/should not move all of the directories because some core windows processes would not be happy, and some non-ms programs would be as well. Now I never got around to actually try…

We have several network drives which have the security set up as: Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read, Write. Basically, we want people to see what is in the folder and review the documents, but for legal reasons, once it's in these folders we don't want them to be able to edit or delete them, so we DON'T give them: Full control, Modify, or Special Permissions. This configuration has worked great for the last seven or eight years. We just upgraded our users to Office 2010 this week. No one can save documents directly from Office to any of these drives. They can save the documents to their desktop, then copy it to the drive, but if they are in Word or Excel…

I'm sure I did this several months ago but can not get to work now. Have 2 Nics in PC: 192.168.61.201 and 202. NICs are connected thru switch. Normally if I ping 202 no packets would go out PC but 201 would ping 202 thru backplane. If I use WinPcap.SendQue and XP SP2, it appeared (based on switch stats) that ICMP request packet from 201 went to switch and response packet from 202 went to switch and then to 201 NIC. Trafffic appeared in Wireshark. My belief was that WinPcap.SendQue forced packet out. Does this seem correct analysis ? Now using XP Pro SP3, previously used SP2 when it worked for capturing both ICMP requests / replies. Same symptoms with wireshark.…

Hello, I wrote a COM object and I want it to run as NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM or NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE. To do this, I just specified NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM in the RunAs entry of my com object in the registry, like explaind here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms680046(v=vs.85).aspx. But, this is not working. I always get the error of "logon failure unknown user name or bad password" for those NT AUTHORITY "users". I checked it on windows 7 AND IT WORKED, but on xp (sp3) i got that problem. What I do wrong? Should I set a password for them? Continue reading...

Microsoft Community, I have a computer that has a smaller then necessary C: Partition. As this is a shared computer the C drive needs more space. I have used a partition utility to resize the D partition successfully. Now with the 20 GIG's of free space that is claimable how to I add it to the C partition. Do I make the partition C Dynamic and try to use windows to merge the additional space into the C drive. Keep in mind I need to keep the operating system and the data intact. Is there a way Microsoft or otherwise recommended to be able to do this. Any ideas you have is acceptable. Thanks Community, Bobbrain Continue reading...

I have tried the add/ remove feature thing several times as well as running repair Office several times as well. I have seen the Recover text Converter in the listed items but no matter what I click on it doesn't seem to get installed and end up not listed in the drop down on the Open command. By Paul Thurrott Microsoft is in the process of consolidating all of its somewhat separate online accounts--Windows Live ID, Xbox LIVE, Zune and Zune Pass, and many more--into a single aggregate account it will call Microsoft Your Account. Kudos to my Windows Secrets co-author Rafael Rivera for uncovering this change, which has been misreported elsewhere. Continue reading...

By Paul Thurrott While Microsoft and its hardware partners race to deliver a suitable Windows 8-based tablet experience by the end of 2012, the innovators at OnLive have accomplished something previously thought impossible: They’ve brought the current version of Windows--and Office, and Adobe Reader and Flash--to the iPad today. And it works surprisingly well. Continue reading...
