By Paul Thurrott In Windows 8, the interactive Setup process has been streamlined and evolved yet again, lopping off more time and, as important, often reducing the number of steps that the user must undergo in order to set up and install the OS. Continue reading...

Hello. On 2/9/2012, MSE found that the trojan JS/BlacoleRef.R had been downloaded to my machine and recomended that it be removed. I allowed MSE to remove the file, but since then, MSE has not performed the daily scheduled scan as it had before. This persists even though I repeated the steps in MSE to schedule a scan, shut down and restarted the machine, and MSE and MalwareBytes say that there are no threats on my machine. How do I re-enable scheduled scans and how can I be sure that I'm not still infected? Thanks. Continue reading...

I have an issue with an XP SP3 machine running IE8. Group policy adds in two addresses to the intranet settings. This works fine in windows 7 and is not occuring on all machines. The policy is applied successfully, and the appropriate keys appear in the registry that would contain the settings. All the settings seem to be there, RSOP shows they are correct. To me it seems like IE cannot read the registry keys for the intranet zone. Now i can go in and add an intranet site though IE and it creates a registry key, but as soon as you close the window and open it back up, the setting does not appear. It will retain the 'require https:' setting. I've looked at the perm…

Hi, IE9 was automatically installed on my 64-bit Windows 7 pc. I took the tutorial and it seems to really work well. I then loaded PhotoSuite 6 and wanted to view their tutorials under their University page. When I clicked on one, the video did not show up. Instead, all I got was a blank white space. Prior to purchasing this software, I was able to view all the videos with IE8. Now I cannot. It is not a Flash problem because I can still get to www.studio14k as well as other flash sites. I went in to IE and made OnOneSoftware.com a safe site. I even asked my friend to try to look at the videos and she had no problems. Other than this, I love IE9. I did not inst…

We are having problems with Office 2010 activations. It appears that we have a problem with the current count being less than 5. Currently it is 2. Unfortunately we don't really have anymore computers. The computers waiting on activation also have problems with the grace period being expired. Is there a method to force activation via KMS with a lower count? Continue reading...

I have an issue that I'm sure has a simple explanation but I don't know it. I have a folder tree that whenever a user moves a folder from one folder to the next, the permissions do not update. Yet if a user copies the same folder to the same location, the permissions update as expected. This only happens with XP. If I try it with Win 7, whether the user moves or copies, the permissions update. Has anyone seen this or have an explanation? Continue reading...

We have a Windows 7 64bit image that several people spent a lot of time preparing, and now the system won't boot after running sysprep, and systems that got imaged with the same image, won't boot and get the same error. The error that comes up is: "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click “OK” to restart the computer, and then restart the installation." I would like to know if there's some way I can repair the image so it will boot again. A lot of time was spent working on this thing. We think it is the actual sysprep I have tried using a Windows 7 64bit repair disk, but …

I was able to make the OOBE process as unattended as possible and this is the last step. Thank you in advance, Tom Continue reading...

I'm curious to hear from any Sys Admins that have upgraded to Office 2010 and any advantages or disadvantages you saw in the new version. We are still on Office 2007 and arent having any issues we need to solve and I cannot find any features in 2010 that motivate me to spending the time to upgrade the company. So I'm wondering how the rest of you are fairing. Lossless Audio Addict Continue reading...
