I've been imaging systems for many years but haven't quite wrapped my head around the Windows 7 SysPrep approach. Personally I think MDT is overkill for the size of our shop and I'm afraid it'll take longer to figure out than its worth. Our image is really simple and doesn't change that much. I was just trying to create ONE image for Windows 7 that could be used across multiple hw platforms. If i create win7x64 install and copy serveral hw models drivers to C:\Drivers on a virtual machine and image it using SnapShot, everything works perfectly. I boot a new system with BartPE, image the system with my SnapShot image and the system is added to the domain, all device dr…

Windows 7 and using Outlook--my computer continues to send duplicate emails to some of my contacts and MS Security Essentials does not find anything wrong. How can I get rid of this bug or virus please? It all started after I opened an email about a new ring tone supposedly popular in new York. Thank you. Continue reading...

Windows Mobile 6.1 - Proxy Settings issue. Our business app communicates via web services. We expect the proxy settings to never be set. When our device gets cradled to pull log files or copy files we are guaranteed to see the proxy settings get set (based on Internet Explorer on desktop.) How do I programmatically un-set the Proxy Settings? Continue reading...

Using WAIK/Deployment Workbench, we have successfully deployed Windows 7 Pro with applications to a set of dell Optiplex 745s. There are no errors during or after the deployment. However, after logging into the workstation, I am unable to print or add network printers. Our printers are located in //powervault/[printer name]. //powervault is a windows 2008 R2 server with X64 and x32 drivers. I currently have windows XP, vista, 7 (64 and 32 bit) clients all printing fine. In the past, I've used a .bat file to deploy printers. There are a total of 6 printers from various manufacturers. So far I have tried: - Browsing to //powervault and double clicking on printe…

Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, x64. Built from Volume License media that included Service Pack 1. Installed a large number of applications with intention of capturing a Thick Image for deployment using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit. I have reproduced my problem outside of the MDT environment using sysprep by itself, so this issue is not specific to MDT. After running c:\windows\system32\sysprep\sysprep.exe /generalize /oobe /unattend:unattend.xml, I get a Fatal Error. Output from setuperr.log: 2012-02-29 13:39:46, Error SYSPRP WindowsSideShow: Failed to get task folder (0x80070003) 2012-02-29 13:39:46, Error [0x0f0082] SYSPRP Launch…

022611 I downloaded and successfully installed Windows 7 SP1 for my 32bit Windows 7 Professional, installed on a HP 2710p 1.2 Core 2 Duo Tablet Computer with 3GB RAM and 80GB HD. 030111 the system attempted a Windows Activation which failed with a 0x8007007B error "the filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect." I have 25 days before Windows makes my life really miserable. I have tried creating a new administrative permissions user and ran the activation with the same error. I have looked through the forums on Microsoft Support, here and googled this as well. The closest thing I found is here for installing SP1. I got it installed, but it reset my…

I have been experiencing some issues on Win 7 Pro on some of our systems. Sometimes it takes a long time (15 + mins) to even get to the logon prompt, but most of the time is is after the user logs on. It will go to the desktop, but will show no icons or taskbar. I could do ctr+alt+del and bring up task manager. There are only a few processes active. It seems that if I end task on unregmp2.exe, all the remaining processes will load and the desktop appears. I ran msconfig to see if I could remove that from startup, but do not see it. I was leaning torwards a GPO problem until I found this. Continue reading...

My security essentials will not update, I get no error message, it appears like it just cannot connect. The regular windows update works fine. In addition, livemail and outlook will not sync. I recently some how downloaded a virus and had to get on my computer in safe mode and I scanned with a Stinger and Microsoft Essentials and both came up with a BackdoorWin32/Cybot.B but I still have this on my computer but it is quarantined but my Essentials tells me to remove immediately and I was wondering if anyone knew how I could do this without paying for it? I am a intermediate computer person but I do know my way around, is this possible for me? My laptop seems to be much slower too. Thank you, Larry Sandgren Continue reading...

By Paul Thurrott While Windows 8 introduces an innovative new web-based installer I’ll be looking at soon, this version of the OS also supports installing the OS from DVD media or a USB memory device, much like Windows 7. In this article, I’ll examine how to do so. Continue reading...
