"Windows could not parse or process the unattend answer file for pass [specialize]. The settings specified in the answer file cannot be applied. The error was detected while processing settings for component [Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup]" I have a very detailed Unattend.xml file that I have been working on for about a month now and I have managed to hammer out all the details of getting drivers to install based on the hardware, name the machine, add to the domain, set power setttings so on and so fourth. Anyways, the last process in this long list of items it to get the Default profile edited. I have a local user profile, that's a member of the Administrators group.…

Hi: As a preface, FYI, my autoplay is turned off. I recently discovered that my usb connected flash drive was not accessible via My Computer. I googled the problem and was led to Disk Management. In Disk Management's Diskeeper, the flash drive is listed and is healthy. In a google fix, the instructions were to change the drive letter, etc. but that hasn't worked. To sum up, the flash drive appears in Device Manager, Disk Management but not recognized in My Computer. Am I not using Disk Management properly? Continue reading...

I didn't have any issues with IE10 in the original Win8 beta, but now that I'm on Win8 Consumer Preview I can't get IE to load websites on my local subnet. It says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." I'm not sure how to get a more detailed error than that. I can access sites outside of my subnet just fine. I can ping the websites inside my subnet fine. I can even telnet to them over port 80 and get the content that way. But in IE? No. Any ideas? Or has anyone else seen this? Continue reading...

I am having some issues using the DISM tool to add updates to my base WIM. I have Googled to no avail..This has all been done from an elevated command prompt. I am also logged in as a domain admin so there shouldn't be any issues with permissions on the machine itself. I have also tried this with another admin account and tried both accounts on another PC to verify it wasn't a PC/Account problem. Here is the CMD line error: C:\>dism /Image:C:\Mount /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\Updates\KB2530548\KB2530548.msu Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool Version: 6.1.7600.16385 Image Version: 6.1.7600.16385 Processing 1 of 1 - Adding package c:\Updates\K…

I've ran across an issue with IE9 that is affecting file downloads. Some clients get a prompt like the first image below and after clicking any option nothing happens. Other clients get a prompt like the 2nd image below and everything works correctly. From my research the 2nd image reflects the new download manager stuff in IE9 but I can't find a setting that control the behavior between image 1 and image 2. The images reflect the same download from the same url. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. I've came across something that seems to be part of the issue. A software package we use changes the iexplore.exe value form 1 to 0 in the FEATURE_MIME_HANDLING key ea…

I just installed Professional Plus 64-bit on a fairly fresh install of Windows 7 Pro. Whenever I try to start Help, I get the dreaded “Configuration Progress” window with the agonizingly slow progress bar. About halfway through, the Help Viewer window opens with an entirely blank, gray interior. When the configuration finishes, it prompts me to reboot. Whether I do or not, the next time I try Help, same thing. I never can actually use Help. (After setup, I am helpfully informed that no help topics match my request.) I have replicated this in both Word and Excel. Several other posts relate similar problems, but apparently always on program start, so I'd like to rei…

I am in an interesting situation involving the deployment of Windows 7 on Apple hardware utilizing the ‘BootCamp’ feature in OS X (10.5 and 10.6). The IT support management of the various subunit’s wants to be able to deploy (via LTI) Windows 7 Enterprise x86 to MacBook’s while protecting the integrity of the Mac OS X operating system that has already been installed (and in some cases, heavily configured). The environment they have for Lite Touch goes as follows…They have a brand new Lab / Staging server running Server 2008 R2 and MDT 2010 RC x64 with Windows 7 WAIK RTM. Their soon to be ‘Production’ Deployment Share is hosted on DFS share on a SAN with Deduplication en…

Hi, I have several users who are on a mostly of Windows XP and a select few on Windows 7 but for some strange reason all of their clocks have gone fast by approx 7 minutes and it from trying to change it to the correct time, it will not remember it - it could change after 20 minutes of use or after a restart and this is the same on all users. I have also tried to correct the Time from the BIOS as well but this still leads to a dead end. Any help guys, seems like a peculiar issue and I know its nothing of extreme importance but these users dont have clocks in the office so only go by the time on the machine.... They left the office a little early one afternoon and didn't…

Windows version: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 X64 Build String, from WERInternalMetadata.xml: 7601.17640.amd64fre.win7sp1_gdr.110622-1506 I have an application written in pure Java, not running with elevated permissions. It's a data processing library. The tests are multi-threaded and run a ton of threads, and over 2 GB of RAM. When I run it normally, I get a BSOD, or else the whole system hangs. When I run it with MSE disabled, everything works fine. (Technically some tests fail, but that's not Microsoft's fault) This problem happens on two very different computers, both of which are Windows 7 SP1 x64. The application has no GUI component, so I doubt the problems…

I'd like to force all my systems to "Show icon and notifications" for my antivirus software. That way users will be able to see when the icon changes indicating that the AV is no longer working. I've found ways of forcing all icons to show but I'd like to selectively just force this one to show. I know how to force it to show using the "Customize..." system interface but I'd like to force it to happen through a reg hack, group policy or copying a file or something. I've got too many users using too many different systems to run around and manually change it each time a new users logs on. Is there a way of putting this setting in the default profile so it automaticall…
