Searching for a network printer in the directory doesn't include trusted domains
by Guest jordan.tucker- 0 replies
I have 3 different domains in 3 different forests. I have recently started migrating users and PCs from Domain A to Domain B. I have noticed that when adding a printer and using the "find a printer in the directory" option, it is only listing the printers in Domain B for the users that have moved to Domain B. Even selecting "Browse" will not allow choosing a different domain. However, on our Windows 7 clients, which are also in Domain B, using the same function allows searching in any of the trusted domains - A, B, or C. It doesn't matter which user is logged in. And the client machines are receiving the same set of group policies. Is this a limitation of XP? Or is ther…

I have 100 + files that all start with the same four characters that I wish to rename. This would be a two second command line operation in DOS with wildcards, but my file names are 30 - 50 characters long. Only the first four characters are the same in every file name and I want to preserve the remaining characters as they are now. How can I do this in Windows other than manually changing them one by one? Brad Windows XP Pro (32), Vista Business (64), 7 Pro (64) Continue reading...

Event Record Errors
by Guest KerenInc- 0 replies

We use Windows XP Professional and two night ago the computer crashed - after rebooting a Microsoft Windows window popped up that said: The system has recovered from a serious error. A log of this error has been created. etc. When I checked the logs yesterday I noticed that it was completely full and had therefore not created the log that it said it had. After clearing the logs and rebooting again I found a few warning and error messages and I after trolling the many, many websites regarding the subjects of these logs I have yet to find anything that has helped. I am hoping that if I post them here someone will at least know something helpful about at leas…

Updating Custom Templates for Office 2010
by Guest Jan-Eric Olsson- 0 replies

Hi all, This question is a bit of a follow up to the topic http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/da-da/officesetupdeploy/thread/fbc4bf23-c9fb-4a6c-a981-49f68127bf77 Since Office 2010 caches the xml data (in the registry at [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\Spotlight\Content]) and image files (on the clients' filesystem) for the deployed custom templates, I wonder what the best way to update the centrally placed templates would be. I guess the point of having all templates on a network drive would be that it would be easy to make updates to just that one location, and then all users would use the same, and latest, version. So why does Office…

installing a backup user on remote machine
by Guest johnny77- 0 replies

I have a small workgroup of computers (mixture of XP and 7 machines) in which I have a batch file on each system that will run a RoboCopy of their local data down to another pc acting as the 'backup station' The batch file is C:\BackupLocal.bat I want to set up a hidden user with administrator priveledges that will run this batch file after hours even if the main user is logged out. My problem is that they use the Windows user screen to select their log in name and go and I didn't want another username showing up on that list. The users are always changing their passwords so I can't really use their usernames in a task because it will stop working once they change t…

Slowness loading page that uses CSS
by Guest RossanaF- 0 replies
The main page of my website loads two frames. The right-side frame is a blank page and the left-side frame consists of a bulleted list, my company's logo and 3 other icons. The graphics are not bigger than 5k each. This frame uses an external css file to control the formatting. When I load this page in other browsers, it loads quickly and without problems. When I load it through IE, it takes up to 10 seconds to load. The index.html and left-side frame pages were coded manually. I'm also having problems with other pages on that website that were created using Microsoft Word. Unless I save the pages as Web Page, Filtered, the load time is very long and/or the graphics may …

Machine wont sleep when user is logged on with redirected profile
by Guest stealthgeek- 0 replies

Hi We are currently trying to get our machines to sleep, but it appears that since we use redirected folders for our profiles (with caching disabled, if it makes any difference), Windows stops the machine from sleeping. I have tried: Group Policy and local policy changes to enable automatic sleep with network files open Group Policy and local policy changes to deny applications to keep the machine awake Removing all USB devices except the mouse/keyboard Using the POWERCFG.exe -REQUESTSOVERRIDE switch for the \FileSystem\rdbss driver Nothing seems to work. Below is a report from one of the machines: Scan Time 2011-05-20T10:56:59Z Scan Duration 60 seconds Sys…

regular users prompted to install a driver on login
by Guest JS2010- 0 replies
Any idea how to disable Windows prompting regular users to install a driver? I think it's the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT driver (but it's already installed). It installs without prompting (according to the system tray) if I login as a user in the administrator group. Some processes I can see. I think it's using the Task Scheduler, but I don't see anything in the task history: dcom/plugnplay/power svchost.exe rundll32.exe C:\Windows\system32\newdev.dll,pDiDeviceInstallAction \\.\pipe\PNP_Device_Install_Pipe_2.{6d9101a7-62fa-44fa-9b4e-0c8d179de38b} "pci\ven_1002&dev_9583&subsys_0083106b&rev_00\4&1e528e0b&0&0008" "C:\Windows\System32\dinoti…

by Guest Insaf Muhammed- 0 replies

Hello All, I am trying to run some CBT Nuggets video training stuff for the lats one week, but which doesn't seem to work due to some IE8 settings. When I run the 'index.hta' file from the CBT folder, the CBT nuggets media player opens up in IE8 with a warning ''To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this webpage from running scripts or ActiveX controls that could access your computer. Click here for options'' And when I click 'allow the blocked content' from the notice bar, it pops up another warning 'Scripts are usually safe. Do you want to allow scripts to run?' , OK I keep on licking YES to this warning and reach to CBT videos index page. …

How do I remove one version of Windows XP from a partitioned drive that now has two?
by Guest fudbucket- 0 replies
Hi all, no idea if this is being posted in the right place, I've been looking at the list of forums for about half an hour and still can't find one that seems to fit, so apologies if it is in the wrong place, if someone can tell me where it should go I'll repost it. Anyway, the question. I have a partitioned hard drive, something I've never had before, and recently needed to reload Windows due to a bit of malware that wouldn't let me open any protection software. So I reinstalled Windows from the disc expecting the old Windows to be overwritten. I now have two versions on my PC. Can someone please tell me how I can get rid of the old one but keep the new?
