I'm working on homework for my college coursework. We're running simulation models which require a lot of logical statements to be used, and thus a lot of long formulas. After I made one simulation, I was ready to run it 1000 times in a data table under what-if analysis in the data ribbon. I accidently put in the wrong information, and as I went to correct it, I chose the top left cell and started deleting the information from the cell without realizing what would happen (I know that it was the wrong way to go about deleting the table, but it was just instinct). Once I removed all the information and clicked out, an error box appeared saying "You cannot change information…

I used system update to update from SP2 to SP3. Now the system cannot recognize the hard drive. I got a SP2 CD from Microsoft to try to reinstall SP2 and find the problem, but I get a screen that is not in the instructions that the MS tech gave me. Is this a known issue, and how do I repair my system if I can't get it to boot? Continue reading...

By Paul Thurrott This is interesting. Microsoft released a beta version of a new management interface for its keyboards and mice. Dubbed the Microsoft Device Center, this software runs only on the Windows 8 Consumer Preview and provides a hint, perhaps, at the future of device management on Windows. Continue reading...

Hello, I have a box where I installed IE9 by running the "IE9-Windows7-x64-enu.exe" executable from a mapped network drive - N:\. Now I have the situation where when new users are logging in, their "Internet Explorer" (the standard x86 version) is pointing to: "N:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" Can you please advise on how to fix this? I know that the IE shortcut is being generated by active setup registry: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\>{26923b43-4d38-484f-9b9e-de460746276c}] @="Internet Explorer" "Version"="9,0,8112,16421" "IsInstalled"=dword:000000…

I have a new Nike Fuelband. When I plug it in to the USB port I hear the descending two tone sound indicating that a USB device has been unplugged. No device show up on the USB controller list in the Device Manager. When I UNPLUG it, I hear the two tone ascending sound indicating that a USB device has been connected, and my PC attempts to install a new device. An "Unknown Device" shows up on the list of USB controllers. Uninstalling this unknown device has no effect. When I next plug in the fuelband, I get the same behavior. I can find no way to uninstall the corrupted Fuelband driver. My other USB devices work fine. I also tried uninstalling all of the USB devic…

Did a scan on my computer and security essentials detected 7 viruses or trojins. It quarenteened 5 but allowed 2. It won't let me deleat them . The title for this post is one of them. The other is VieTool:Win32?obfuscator.WA . The ? mark is my way of not writing the exact command line just incase it can be transfered with this post. the question mark is a / . I changed my settings for actions to remove did a second full scan and it's showing still there . Emptied all temp files, did a registry edit also. Is this just showing a false detection or are they a real threat? One of them says it can be remotly controlled by the attacker. Continue reading...

By default, the System Restore feature in created when XP Pro is installed, right? Even after the system is completely patched beyond sp3, the System Restore TAB is present under any local admin account created. This is verified by RIGHT click on My Computer, left click on Properties, see and click on System Restore TAB. After the system is joined to the 2008 domain and restarted, and one logs into a local admin account OR the domain account (with Administrators Group privileges), the System Restore TAB is not present. The 2008 Group policy (for System Restore) has not been edited. It has been left at the default setting which is 'not configured' I have tested this …

A user on a W7-64 workstation with a Remote Desktop or Standard User on an SBS 2003 domain finds the option to "Use Printer Offline" disabled (grayed out). For an admin it's enabled. How do I change the security settings to allow all Remote Desktop Users to have access to this feature? I'm guessing it's a security setting someplace in the Group Policy but I can't find it. Maybe diguised as a permission like "Allow user to change printer settigs" or something like that? And woudl it be controlled on the domain or the local machine? Continue reading...
