HI, I am new here and I am wondering how to install XP via USB (flash drive or external drive, I got a 20gb) I also like to add, but not so important but interested if can be done. Can I use my external hdd (laptop 20gb) and make it where I can install XP via usb and also like to add two other installations, Vista, 7. ANd have them all on this drive at one time and when I boot via usb and choose either XP or Vista or 7. Can this be done? I want to be able to install three different Windows OS (not at once) on this one drive. Possible? And I am willing to do very technical stuff here. Continue reading...

I have a computer with Windows 7 Home Premium. I want to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional, preserving my already installed applications, user accounts and data (i.e. I want upgrade, not do a clean install). I already have a (never-installed) full-version W7 Pro product so I don't want to use the "Anytime Upgrade" web upgrade. I'm a little confused by some online souces which indicate that the upgrade path from W7 Home Premium to W7 Pro isn't supported. Does anyone have experience with the upgrade I describe and is it supported? Thanks, EdR Continue reading...

What's going on, a friend's e-mail got a link only and no other words? That's very unusual. We communicated infrequently, but I know he is a good person. He would never hurt me. I have never clicked on the LINK, afraid it could be a virus. Is it possible that his computer was infected and the bad guy used his computer to send me a virus. Thanks, Skip Continue reading...

Hi, I was recently contacted by someone caiming to be from Microsoft on and international call (possibly India?) saying he was ringing me to help rid my computer of the Trojan bug. He was asking me to enter things onto my laptop. I was very suspicious of this as I have not asked for any help, and how did they get my telephone number? When I queried who they were he passed me to his supervisor who tried to reassure me. Obviously this was not helpful as I still could not be certain who they were. Do Microsoft randomly call people to "help" with viruses and bugs? Where would they get contact names and details from. This is the first time I have ever registered …

Hi All, I've very weird problem with security essential. I downloaded the security essential when I bought my netbook. For few months it was working fine. I was able to update it regularly. Now, somehow, it is not getting activated. I mean, it is off in my system. The notification area shows that security essential is off. When, I click on that to turn it on, the turn on button is grey out. - I searched a lot to find out the reason but there is no help at all. - I found the microsoft defender is creating the trouble, I turn it off and tried to on the security essential but no luck. - I also tried to update it but there is no luck again. The error I get is so…

Hi, On our network, we have recently encountered an issue that seems to be affecting both IE 8 and IE 9. The affected computers experience memory spikes on the iexplore process for a particular tab after a message pops up in that tab that states that a script on the page is causing the page to run slowly. This is definitely not an issue exclusive to any particular website and seems to appear on any site that contains scripts. Regardless of whether you choose to allow scripts to continue to run on the page or not, the memory usage for that particular iexplore process jumps to about one and a half gigabytes, which dramatically slows down the computer, and crashes it in som…

Hi Since upgrading from IE6 to IE8 we have a number of users who are finding that they are having to request new personnal certificates from certain websites. Does IE8 handle these certificates in a different way to IE6 or should the certs already installed simply carry over and work with IE8? The users are on Windows XP SP3 in case that has any bearing on this. This is causing a number of issues that I simply don't have the answers for so if anyone could advise that would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your asistance. Continue reading...

I'm running RC 1 32 bit on a pre-historic Asus A6U notebox with 1.6 ghz Turion and two gigs of RAM, and am really impressed with it overall. However, it doesn't seem to detect either the built-in monitor (15.4" LCD) nor an external Philips 170S LCD monitor which I am also using, and loads default drivers (it has both a default PNP and non-PNP driver installed). My video card is SIS M760 and Windows 7 informs me that the driver is up to date. I have tried installing the Philips 170S driver but it doesn't get associated with either of two screen which appear when I set screen resolution, nor am I able to replace or update the driver at that point. My Philips LCD sh…

I'm trying to download some files .flv from certain website, but Internet Explorer 9 slows down my PC, and I've found something quite interesting: When I checked this on ProcessExplorer, that FLVSplitter.ax file came from my C:\Program Files\K-Lite Codec Pack\Filters folder. But I'm not runnng any video requiring K-Lite codecs to OPEN, and IE9 is just using that filter because it's downloading FLV files. EVEN IF I DON'T PLAY THEM, WHY DOES IT WASTES MEMORY ON MY MACHINE? Why has IE9 to use those filters while downloading? Is the problem within IE9 (as I suposse)? Or inside the filters? How can I STOP IE9 using those filters while downloading? Is it an program…

I am looking for an easy way to change my primary partition (which uses the entire drive) to one that is half that size so that I can setup a dual-boot with both XP and Win7. Is there a way to make the partition SMALLER or cut it in half? I have plenty of space on it that will likely never get used. Oh, of course I am looking for a way that does NOT involve reformatting the entire drive and/or losing my data. Continue reading...
