We set up about 10 laptops with Windows 7 and installed Office 2007 & 2010 (2007 first then 2010 to separate directories) for some classes that will teach both versions of the software. Sometimes when you open Word 2007 then close it and then open Word 2010 a configuration screen will come up and it will take a few minutes for Word to open. Is this by design or is there a registry key we can put in to speed up the configuration process? Brother's and Sisters all Rise! Continue reading...

I manage an older application for managing user passwords and access. The application creates a popup window with a simple HTML page that, until IE9, could be saved as a text file. Because of the sensitivity of the information, the form can only be viewed once. In IE9, the popup window opens and displays the information correctly, but when save-as is used to save the form as a text file, the browser reaches back to the web server and requests the page data again, resulting in the password information being displayed as previously viewed. I have read a lot of forum posts and comments about cache management, but did not see anything that applied to this issue. Is this some…

I'm in a corporate environment and we DO NOT want our users to go through the Windows Welcome. There are no local accounts as everyone is required to log in to the domain. Everything I read says to OOBE as the last step, but this removes most of the custom settings I configured. So how do I make a generalized image that doesn't undo what I've done? I understand the need to reseal but what good is it to configure settings only to erase them? Continue reading...

I just started a new job, and was installing Office on the new computer they just purchased. At the time, I did not a work email set up yet, so I used a personal email to get things installed and ready with the intent of changing the email associated with the account later. Fast forward to today, where the boss came by to collect the card with the Office product key I had written down on it. I go to change the email associated with that product, only to find no way to do so. I called the United States number from this list: https://office.getmicrosoftkey.com/Home/SupportContact and was told that they couldn't change anything! This is absurd, how can they not have th…

There are no minidumps (appears not to have been turned on). I recently decided to back up my phone to my computer. My Outlook at the time of sync was completely empty and my phone had 10 years of information. I downloaded the Mobile Device Center, plugged in my phone and quickly changed the settings so that the phone updates the Desktop for this partnership. Alas, something so simple is so badly messed up by Microsoft. All my contacts now gone. Strange thing is that it did not delete the contacts I added within the past week or so. Anyone have any suggestions? Some information. I am using Outlook 2010 (it was not set as the default for Contacts at the time of sync), Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Continue reading...

By Paul Thurrott It’s a bit earlier than I’d like, but let’s discuss the central issue at the heart of Windows 8, which features dual--or even dueling--user experiences in Metro and the desktop. Does such a two-headed hydra even make sense? Or are we just over-thinking this? Continue reading...

Sometimes, but not all the time, Microsoft Security Essentials detects a medium threat when I start up my computer. It detects a HackTool:Win32/Keygen and I have clicked remove every time it has come up. But I've also noticed something strange, under items it says "process:pid:3432" and doesn't give me a specific location. What is this? AS far as I know, I don't have any keygen on my computer.
