Microsoft Talks Up Windows 8 "Sensor Fusion"
by Guest Paul Thurrott- 0 replies
By Paul Thurrott While most PC users are probably familiar with the concept of hardware peripherals based on technologies such as USB, there’s a new generation of hardware coming to tomorrow’s Windows-based devices that borrows some ideas from the smartphone world. Called sensors, these hardware components will help Windows 8 devices interact in exciting new ways with the outside world, and today Microsoft provided a hint about how Windows 8 combines some sensor data into a cohesive single interface. I am currently trying to install Office 2010 Pro Plus onto my machine that has Access 97 and Access 2003, Visio 2003, Excel 2003, PowerPoint 2003, and Word 2003 installed. I need to keep the previous versions of Office installed as they are used for development work. When I try installing Office 2010 I've stopped with the following error message: "An Office installation on your computer is corrupted and setup cannot continue. Remove or repair the Office 2003 product and re-run setup." I can't remove and repair doesn't seem to do anything. Most posts suggest removing previous office versions or deleting/altering the MS Office registry keys (which would damage the previous …

Threats Detected. Do I Have a Virus?
by Guest FileCorrupt- 0 replies

While following directions on U Tube Video on using “Pareto_DR_Setup_RW”, a data recovery program, I got an alert of a Severe Threat from my Computer and chose to “allow” it. Bad mistake, I believe. I was using Security Essentials, Windows 7 Firewall, and Webroot AV at that time. I am not sure if I have the “Exploit:JS/ShellCode.N” or "Trojan:Win32/Daiboo.A" malware, or not now. MS Security Essentials stated I allowed “Exploit:JS/Shell Code.N” on 12/27/11 at 10 am. However, I do remember when I allowed this “Severe Threat.” That was when I downloaded Pareto_DR. However, that was at a later time. That time was on 12/30/11 at 1:45pm. I was on Wi-Fi hot spot at a …

Setting all new user accounts in Outlook 2010 to use Exchange Online mode when deploying...

Hi, I have created a customised Office 2010 install using OCT and am deploying using SCCM 2007 R3. Everything is working fine except one issue in Outlook 2010. In our environment, we need all users to use Exchange online mode due to the sensitive nature of our email. However, once it is deployed the account uses Cached Exchange mode. I have installed the OCT hotifx (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2545808) and re-saved the .msp file with the following changes after installing the hotfix. Features/Modify User Settings/Microsoft Outlook 2010/Account Settings/Exchange/Cached Exchange Mode: Use Cached Exchange Mode for new and existing Outlook profiles: Disabled Cached Ex…

Unable to upload documents to employment web sites, *.doc, *.pdf files will not upload,...
by Guest z9hlimbu- 0 replies

I first notice the problem about a month ago. Suddenly I am unable to upload my resume to internet job sites. Word and PDF files will not upload and I end up having to manually enter a text version of my resume, which is time consuming and less attractive than the formatted versions. I have MS Word 10 but even saved as compatible to lower versions it will not upload. I've tried saving the documents with shorter file names and making sure they do not exceed the space requirements. I've tried removing text boxes and other unusual formatting in case that was the issue. Off the top of my head, my resume will not upload to government job sites, my university job seeker web sit…

Cannot attach resumes to online job applications
by Guest Sumrbrez- 0 replies
I am unable to attach resumes to online job applications. I click on the "browse" option in the application, I find my resume and attach it (it fills the box in the application) but when I go to continue in the job application, my resume did not upload, the application tells me to upload my resume (again) and I cannot move forward from that field. I don't understand how this happens and I'm missing a LOT of employment opportunities because of it. I feel like it has to be a setting I'm missing, somewhere. Continue reading...

Duplicate SIDs after sysprep
by Guest Steve R- 0 replies
Hopefully, this is the correct forum. here goes: We are about to begin a deployment of Windows 7. So, we created our base computer, ran sysprep with /GENERALIZE /OOBE /SHUTDOWN /UNATTEND:C:\UNATTEND.XML as the command line options, and took an image using Clonezilla. The original computer had a SID of S-1-5-21-721158011-2119862533-4195510018. After cloning, booting, and running the mini setup, the next two computers both had the SID of S-1-5-21-1553930355-1789213565-949934291. How can this be? I would think that the SID generation process would randomize the SID to prevent this. Is there some key step in the process that I missed? Thanks to all who reply. Conti…

The first thing we explored about sensors was how Windows 8 should use them at the system level, to adapt the PC to the environment while preserving battery life. Adaptive brightness The first system feature was automatic display brightness control, or what we call “adaptive brightness.” This was a feature that we first introduced in Windows 7 using ambient light sensors (ALS), and is targeted at mobile form factors like slates, convertibles, and laptops. With today’s display panels supporting brightness levels at approximately twice the intensity of what was common just a few years ago, this feature is more important than ever. By dynamically controlling screen brightn…

After upgrading my Windows 7 x64 SP1 to IE 9, it started closing immediately after it was opened. It occurs on both the safe-mode and regular versions. The only version that will launch is x64. So far, I have done the following: Reinstalled Install both with Windows Update & Downloaded version Downloading from different location than the default Reset internet settings to defaults Ran sfc /scannow with no reported errors Toggled "Use software rendering" Tried running in Windows Safe-Mode Run as admin Tried running under different user Installed ALL Windows Updates The 1st result I got when I googled the issue was one from Microsoft, and it stated to: …

Office 365: Custom Domain Configuration for Email
by Guest Paul Thurrott- 0 replies
By Paul Thurrott If there’s one commonality between my original work with Office 365 last year and my more recent do-over, it’s that setting up a custom, or personalized, domain has been the trickiest part of initial configuration. This isn’t completely Microsoft’s fault, and much of the blame lies with the bizarre and arcane world of Internet domain registration. But it should be easier, and in some cases Microsoft’s own documentation is incorrect or at least incomplete. Continue reading...

I apparently was hit by a virus yesterday. A WARNING - popped up by Malware Protection Center that had a shield in red and green. It noted that I had 24 infected files and listed such things as :Virus.Bat.Gray.705, Trojan-Spy.Win32.Win Patch, Bat.Looper Trojan-PSW.Win32.Hooker.. The required action was to delete. I just closed it and ran a scan that found only 2 files: Trojan.Win32/Simdu.r and Trojan.Win64/Simdu.R The Microsoft Security Essentials only did a quarantine. I wasn't allowed to remove them although this was the recommended action listed. When I opened the computer later, the same warning with shield popped up and said I now had 34 infected files. Micro…

Fill feature in Excel 2010 will not fill!
by Guest hmbeck- 0 replies

I have two students in my Excel class that are having the same problem. When they type a formula in and try to use the Fill handle to fill it down or across, all it does is copy the answer regardless of what we choose on the AutoFill Options button. I have gone to File--Options, and checked to make sure it is Enabled. I am not sure what has happened that it isn't working. Any suggestions? Also, after creating a spreadsheet and then going in and adjusting some of the numbers, it is not automatically recalculating. Any suggestions here? The student has to double click on each of the cells that contains a formula and then has to hit Enter for it to recalculate. ???? …
