Hi, I am really shocked that I cannot find a decent answer already about this anywhere on the net. I am just setting up roaming profiles and folder redirection for Windows 7. I am linking the Document, Music, Pictures and Video back to a server. Under the libraries in explorer it shows you a concatenation of both the server and the public folders...but I don’t want this. I just want to users to ONLY be able to see the server location. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-CA/w7itproinstall/thread/5d9e9a68-856e-4a5f-a6f6-3144eccf6fa3 This Technet article above simply hides the public folder using the ATTRIB command but does not remove the public folder fro…

I have Windows 7 and have MSE installed. My computer is only 2 yrs old so I don't know how long the scan should take. But the automatic schedule doesn't turn on and when I do it myself it take forever. Right now it is at almost 12.5 hours of scan time. Is this normal? And if not what do I do? Continue reading...

Using Internet Explorer 9 with Windows 7 - and this has got to be the worst Internet Explorer yet to date ... Just about every website that I go to, IE 9 blocks it and the photos on them, especially my facebook account. I would rather have my old IE 7 or 8, but I cannot use those with Windows 7 64 bit. and then, I get messages like Access denied. I am so fed up with Microsoft Internet Explorer that I have to use other browsers like FireFox or Google Chrome and Safari. Surly there has to be a fix for htis porblem or Microsoft should allow us to use earlier versions with Windows 7. Continue reading...

I just re-imaged my Windows 7 64 bit machine. I am running Norton Internet Security suite. Each time I try to access a web address that has https:// I receive "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page". I have searched online for solutions and can't come up with something that works. These are the things I've tried: 1. Contacted Norton - they did a remote desktop session and told me it was an Internet Explorer issue. Also turned off Norton - no luck. 2. visited several Microsoft tech sites - modified advanced settings (activated all SSL and TLC), cleared cache/cookies/etc, re-installed IE 9, did online FIX-IT program and manual FIX-IT (manual fixit was not …

I replaced the hard drive in a friend's Sony Vaio Laptop (Model VGN NW240F) and am trying to install Windows 7. Unfortunately she did not create any restore discs so I'm using a Windows 7 OEM disc and the laptop's OEM key. Unfortunately I've run into the common problem where the installation hangs up at "Completed Installation." I did a google search and found a bunch of solutions, but none of them worked for me. The BIOS is very basic and there are no updates from Sony, so I'm unable to disable USB drivers or make sure the HD controller is on ACHI (common solutions that have worked for others). There are no peripherals plugged into the laptop at all. Any help? I…

I have already installed Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 on my computer using a CD and the product key provided to me. However, I had to restore my computer back to original factory settings due to a virus. When I try to install Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 on this same computer a second time (as it was erased when I restored to original factory settings), it is now telling me my product key is not valid. Is this because I have already installed it once? If so, there surely is a way to identify that I am the same person re-installing it on the same PC. Please advise. Continue reading...

I have Windows 7 64 Bit SP1 Ultimate. I recently started seeing the error message "Your Internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened" when I closed Internet Explorer. This error now comes up every time I close Internet Explorer. At first I just ignored it, but now I can't install some software that I need. After the initial few steps of the software, Windows stops the process and gives me the above error but about the file I am trying to install. I have tried uninstalling my virus scanner (AVG) Put my IE internet settings on the lowest security setting Explicitly, setting the setting "launching applications and unsafe files" to enable ever…

I have been trying to upgrade my Vista Home Premium 64-bit computer to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with no success. On the compatibility test 2 incidents came up 1) was told that imaging device HP Scanjet 4600 might not work correctly. Equipment is not connected to computer and all files that I could find have been uninstalled. 2) was told that Windows 7 might not work correctly with Microsoft JVM. After looking over files I could not find anything listed under Microsoft JVM. I am assuming that even if there was a problem with these files it would not affect the installation of Windows 7. I am using a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit full retail version that was or…

I'm wondering why Microsoft Security Essentials doesn't update itself in real time as the updates become available? I would say that 99% of the time I turn on my computer there is an update available as optional update of course cause Windows Update never notifies me of optional updates. jim Continue reading...

This is an odd question and I apologize if it is in the wrong forum. I am trying to inventory some computers for my company, and previously inventory records have been...spotty at best. Is there any service where I can enter the Windows product key that a computer was activated with, and find out when it was activated? If possible, it would be nice to be able to find this information for XP and 7. Thank you for your time! Continue reading...

Pesky internet explorer keeps popping up in the background unasked when I am browsing on AOL. I tried the previous suggestions (had already, tried again anyway) of eliminating explorer as the default browser, clearing the cache and cookies, etc. It still persists in being a pest. Looking for any other ideas. At this point I'm considering even wiping explorer out completely if need be. Continue reading...

Environment: Windows 7 Enterprise Tools: WAIK, and Sysprep using Unattend.xml created in WAIK using basic settings. I'm having a problem with an image I created following, more or less, the guidance in the Step-by-Step: Basic Windows Deployment for IT Professionals guide. Once Sysprepped I've made copies of the HDD's using a disk duplicator only to find that not only the copies but the originals have two annoying issues that I can seem to resolve through normal startup troubleshooting methods.. I'm getting to the point where I have to look at re-building the original images, but I want to avoid the issue next time. These images were created from an imagex .wim f…

I had a virus or something on Windows 7 laptop, so I ran security essentials and no viruses showed up. I was going to restore but first thought it would be smart to back up data so I created a recovery media boot & data media and saved it to my external hard drive which already had previous back up files on it. When I saved the recovery media to the external drive, It did not ask to for a folder name to be saved in, but rather just saved the data to my USB external hard drive. All the folders, files & data does not come up anymore, only the recovery media for a restore. Are those files/folders gone now or is there some way to retrieve them? Continue reading…
