By Paul Thurrott It looks like Apple’s new iPad runs a lot hotter than its predecessor, thanks to a beefier processor, bigger battery, LTE antenna, and other factors. Apple says the thermal specifications of the device are on target, however. Continue reading...

I have a fresh install of Office 2010 Pro Plus and it didn't pick up the .mdb file association. When I got to the association dialog MS Access does not appear in the list of programs. I can browse for Office 14\MSAccess.exe but on return to the dialog MSAccess still does not appear in the list of options. There is a large number of programs in the Other Program list so perhaps the File Associate code has a problem with too many options? Any body seen this probem or know of a work around? Continue reading...

Greetings, I am currently interested in setting up a relatively comprehensive, unattended answer file which hopefully covers most (if not all) configuration settings, thus shaving away time and pressure during deployment. The following are a few points I would like to cover and I'd appreciate any help on the matter. - Be able to over-ride the default currency setting forced when specifying keyboard layout. (E.g. set default keyboard layout to English UK but use the € currency). - Setup the Maltese keyboard to be recognized as a backup layout. The code specified was [2057:00000809 66618:0001043a] and that should incidate the en-UK and Maltese 48-Key. Sadly t…

When I try to run MSE, I get an error code 0x80070715, it won't run and says to uninstall and reinstall. When I try to remove it, it tells me that it can't find the files necessary to INSTALL and to download the files from the website. When I try to download the files from the website, I'm told that MSE is already installed and I need to uninstall, error code 0x4FF02, which takes me back to my first sentence, How do I uninstall and reinstall? Hi, I've found a way to let IE9 crash with very simple Javascript that we use in one of our products. We were able to remove it from our code but I think its a good idea to fix it in IE itself. Unfortunately I haven't found a way to contact the IE development team in private since I suppose it isn't the best idea to present a demo on how to crash IE in public (I'm not into security so I have no idea if this could be used to do actual harm to the visitor of a page other than shutting her browser down). I'd be happy to send a "working" example, reduced to about 6 or 7 lines of Javascript to an IE developer or, if requested, present it here. I suspect that IE10 will also …

When I try to remote desktop into a specific computer (I can remote desktop in other computer with no problems), I can start typing my login credentials and it will take a few minutes before it will start typing the letters one at a time (AKA lag). When you finally click OK to login it gives me this error. the issue seems to be on the Desktop i am trying to remote into, a simple SYSTEM RESTORE on that system fixes this issue. But it will start happening again. (Could be a month could be a week). There have been no windows updates, driver installs or software installs. Continue reading...

Turn off reading pane for all folders including personal folders. When a customer here is trying to add in another persons mailbox folders which were converted into a personal folder for them to have and not gain access to the original inbox to send emails as that person, the reading pane is on for all folders in the personal folders. I've tried disabling the reading pane but it seems we have to individually for each folder. Is there a speedier process to change it for all folders? Thanks! Continue reading...

Since I started using Microsoft Security Essentials my email access has slowed dramatically. After I open Outlook Express 6, if I click to view an existing email it takes 28 seconds before it opens. No new processes are started in this time, and there is very little processor use, but the hard drive light is on continuously. I've removed all other malware programs, but no improvement. I'm running XP SP3. Any suggestions? Or should I just abandon MSE and go back to AVG/Spybot/ASC? Continue reading...

I have an Outlook 2010 calendar in a PST file as part of an IMAP email account. The calendar has several conditional formatting rules which change the colour of the calendar entry in the MONTH view, depending on the words in the subject line. For example, if the word IBM is in the subject line, the calendar entry turns blue! All this setup works fine. I now want to copy this calendar in its pst file to a different computer, which also uses Outlook 2010. I have copied the pst file successfully and the new calendar looks the same as the old one EXCEPT that I have lost the conditional formatting rules. Questions: is it possible to copy the calendar's conditional formattin…

I'd like to write a powwershell script to set a Theme (.themepack-File) for all the users on my system. I already did this successfully in Windows XP, but cannot make it run in Windows 7. The problem is that the Theme is later available for the other user, but not activated. When I try to set the theme for a user that is currently logged on, it works flawlessly of course. Here is what I do in my scrupt, the $cred variable already contains the user credentials required. I run this script as an addministrator user from another user account. $args = "/K " $args += "`"$env:MYTESTPATH\themes\Touch-Win7.themepack`"" $cred = Get-CredentialMachineUser $proc = start-proces…
