Is there a way to perform a simple sysprep on a Windows 7 Pro image, once I have all the applications preinstalled, that I want on it. I'm fine with having to manually walk through the initial settings (i.e. computer name, user name, etc.) just as long as I know that sysprep reset the SID on the image so I can use it for an install on different desktop PCs. Folks, Given that the User Profile directory is set in AD appropriately: If in the destination directory both types of profile files are found, both NTUSER.DAT and NTUSER.MAN, which one is going to be processed? I would hope the .MAN would take precedence, but I don't know and can't tell in the production environment right now. (It's a live world for someone I'm taking control of for a while, and I just found these directories with both files in them.) I know that XP and W7 also use different directories, and these happen to be in the W7 (.v2) directory, but it wouldn't surprise me to find other directories as well. Thanks! Continue reading...

The Internet Explorer team along with the broader Web community has continued to make improvements to the IndexedDB specification. IndexedDB is a W3C Working Draft that enables you to store, search, and retrieve data on the user's device, even when Internet connectivity is disabled. IndexedDB is a feature of the Web platform shared by IE10 and Metro style apps in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. This blog post describes changes we made in Internet Explorer 10 Consumer preview to implement the latest version of the W3C spec. Changes to Versioning The most significant change involves how developers update their database schemas (i.e. object stores, indexes) from one ve…

By Paul Thurrott As with previous Windows versions, it’s possible with Windows 8 to configure your PC with two or more operating systems, choosing between them via a boot menu of some kind. And this configuration, typically called a dual-boot or multi-boot configuration, comes with just a few gotchas to consider ahead of time. Continue reading...

I have read the The Machine SID Duplication Myth on Mark Russinovich's blog: http://blogs.technet.com/b/markrussinovich/archive/2009/11/03/3291024.aspx I am curious to know of people's experiences of deploying W7 images with and without running sysprep. I know sysprep does more than just reset the machine SID, but in the 'real world' how have people fared? I appreciate Mark's caveats about taking care with duplicate SIDs on DCs and when using WSUS. However, really how necessary is it to sysprep workstations? Thanks for any views/insites Anastas Continue reading...

Hi, I had a security alert whilst on line today, it came from Internet security which I think might be a private company selling computer security, I have not signed up for this which is sinster in its self, but when you take into account it tells me that I have 59 high risk trojans and other malware on my computer and then asks me to sign and pay money by credit card to get rid of them, and that I can't get on my security essentials or my paid for PC Cleaner to double check the computer for malware, and get this my main computer will not let me on help and support to ask this question, you must admit it does make one very suspicious, I do however have stopzilla on my com…

Hi, I recently ran updates on my computer and IE 7 was taken up to IE 9. I had CCTV plugins that dont work with IE 9 (I find out too late) so now I want to revert to IE 7 or IE 8. No download that I can find for either IE 7 or IE 8 will run on Windows 7. Both throw up a library error. Can anyone suggest a solution please. My Windows 7 Ultimate had IE 7 intalled from the box - so it will obviously run. I can remove IE 9 for the Control Panel - but that is about it. I don't belive that the only option would be to completely reinstall Windows to slove the issue - and would it even activate a second time? Continue reading...

Hi - I recently built a new machine, two hard drives, one 60GB SSD for Windows and the bare minimum, and then a 2TB for Program files storage etc. After two days, I'm completely capped on the 60gb drive, and can't even begin to explain where all of the storage went or what Windows is doing. I've unhidden all hidden and system files, and my folder properties look like this: Program files x86 - 4.82gb Program files - 1.81 gb Windows - 16.9Gb Users - 1.14GB TOTAL if I select EVERYTHING in the C: drive: 27.3GB That's exactly where I expected to be. The real question is...when I go to the actual Drive, it tells me I have 896 MB out of 55.8 GB (where 5 gig of my 60 g…
