Dear All, Recently i try to find out what is the maximum physical memory (RAM) supported on Window XP 64 bit? I got two answer from Microsoft website. 1) 128 GB ( http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366778%28v=vs.85%29.aspx#physical_memory_limits_windows_xp ) 2) 16 GB ( http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457053.aspx#EFAA ) Both the above website is from Microsoft.com ( which website should i trust -- msdn or technet ) i know the answer must be 16 GB ( but it has created a doubt in my mind, whether the information in the above website can be trusted or not ) Thanks & Regards, Param www.paramgupta.blogspot.com Continue readi…

I was trying to use some content from selftestsoftware.com through IE.. not Internet Explorer metro app but the traditional one.. this site uses popup blockers. I tried adding an exception for the site.. this didn't help.. added it as a trusted site as its ssl.. didn't help.. I turned the popup blocker off from the privacy tab in ie settings.. this works some times.. I still get a popup saying turn off popup blocker.. but 2 out of 3 times the content now launches.. not sure if this is a bug or not.. I don't think I have installed any 3rd party IE apps.. IE 10.0.2850.0 Continue reading...

Hi all, I have a XP Home laptop and a XP Pro desktop, both in a workgroup and wireless. I had a printer on the XP Pro PC visible and could print to it from the laptop for a long time. Not anymore. On the laptop in my Network places I can see the desktop there but when I click on it, it says it cant find the PC and the network path is not found. On the desktop I see the laptop and when I click on it I get a popup asking for a logon password. in grey I see \\hplaptop\guest so I guess it thinks a guest is looking for the laptop. I have print sharing set on for both and as I said, accessing the printer on the desktop from the laptop worked fine for quite a while but now it d…

Hello, First off, I wasn't sure if this should go under the UI section. Please feel free to move this thread if it is not in the right place. We've already begun our deployment of Windows 7 RTM and would like to automate the disabling of the "Windows Backup" (and only) messages in the Action Center. After poking around on Google and other such places where I'd normally find how to script this, or a registry key I can modify, I can't find anything on this. Does anyone know how to do this, or can point me to a resource that explains where settings for Action Center are stored that can be modified? Thanks in advance. Continue reading...

I have upgraded from Vista to Win 7 on my laptop. I now want to connect through the server to my HP printer. In order to do so I have to delete (per HP) all references to HP from Windows. In the "winsxs" folder are about a hundred references to HP drivers and software. Even though I have uninstalled all of my HP software the links are still in winsxs. I would like to know how to get rid of not only the references to HP but the rest of the products that I have uninstalled from my system. Is there a clean up tool for the winsxs folder incorporated in W7? If not, why not? I do not want to go through the installation of the the HP software (it takes abou…

My desktop PC was badly infected, so I ran MSoft Security Scanner. Seven hours later (!) the scan finished and I rebooted the PC. The viruses appeared to be gone, but so was my Internet access via Internet Explorer. I called Dell tech support. They walked me through stopping and restarting the Ethernet driver several times without success. Finally they told me they would sell me a recovery disk for $20 and I would have to reinstall Windows. I don't want to do this because of other software that's loaded and hard to replace. So I bought a new NIC and installed it from scratch, the installation routine gave no error but the card won't function. -- Internet Explorer shows…

A technical support coworker has a problem with a key system. Basically, somehow the main boot drive is corrupt, the data structure is intact, it will boot part way then hangs and reboots. "The system comes up with a BSOD with error 0xc0000f, complaining about a missing driver ACPI.sys He's tried the startup repair and system restore from the DVD, but it said it could not repair - nor did it find a restore point (strange after 4-5 years of use. NB the system had BCWipe installed, the user stopped it from completing the process part way through, then the errors kicked in on the reboot). I suspect that BCWipe has permanently deleted any system restore points as part …
