In Windows 8, we introduced several concepts and controls to deal with large collections of data. The XAML and HTML ListView control allows you to create uniform grouped lists with a single, homogeneous data source. We also provided guidelines for the hierarchical presentation of data called the hub pattern. Many developers adopted these controls and patterns to create great apps. We saw a lot of innovation and new usage cases in these apps, and heard feedback from you about the additional features you’d like to see in the future. In Windows 8.1, we got the opportunity to analyze these evolving designs. ListView, as the name suggests, is the control that’s optimized for …

We’re always thinking about how we can improve the Windows Store onboarding and publishing process to make things easier for you as an app developer. This week we rolled out a few changes to help you manage the availability of your app in the Store, and we also simplified the app certification requirements. Let’s take a look at these changes and what they mean for you. Setting your app’s release date and time First off, we’ve added more control to choosing the release date for your app. Previously, when you submitted an app, it went live in the Store as soon as certification and the process of publishing the app was completed, or you could select a future date to publis…

As Windows Store app builders, we’re sure you’re aware that apps can experience a variety of failures: hangs, crashes, unavailable services and resources, and any number of unexpected operating conditions. These failures impact your customers’ experience, and if left unaddressed they can even cause customers to stop using your app or move to a competitor’s product. What you might not be aware of is that Microsoft makes this data available to help you build a more stable, reliable app that your customers will love. This post gives you a brief introduction of the Windows Error Reporting (WER) telemetry and how it’s available in the Store dashboard. In addition, we’ll share…

  17. In January, there are those who like to make predictions about the upcoming year. I am not one of those people. Instead, I like to quote Niels Bohr who said, “Prediction is very difficult, especially if it’s about the future.” However, I can say without a doubt that change is afoot in 2014.

All bulletins this month are rated Important in severity and address vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows, Office, and Dynamics AX. The update provided in MS14-002 fully addresses the issue first described in Security Advisory 2914486. We have only seen this issue used in conjunction with a PDF exploit in targeted attacks and not on its own.

  20. In our previous posts in this series, we described various mitigation improvements that attempt to prevent the exploitation of specific classes of memory safety vulnerabilities such as those that involve stack corruption, heap corruption, and unsafe list management and reference count mismanagement. These mitigations are typically associated with a specific developer mistake such as writing beyond the bounds of a stack or heap buffer, failing to correctly track reference counts, and so on.

  21. There are times when we get too close to a topic. We familiarize ourselves with every aspect and nuance, but fail to recognize not everyone else has done the same. Whether you consider this myopia, navel-gazing, or human nature, the effect is the same. I recognized this during the recent webcast when someone asked the question – “What’s the difference between a security advisory and a security bulletin?

  22. Today we released MS13-098, a security update that strengthens the Authenticode code-signing technology against attempts to modify a signed binary without invalidating the signature. This update addresses a specific instance of malicious binary modification that could allow a modified binary to pass the Authenticode signature check. More importantly, it also introduces further hardening to consider a binary “unsigned” if any modification has been made in a certain portion of the binary.

Today we released MS13-106 which resolves a security feature bypass that can allow attackers to circumvent Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) using a specific DLL library (HXDS.DLL) provided as part of Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010.
