This weekend we're testing out a new series called Fund This, where we highlight new or soon-closing crowdfunding campaigns that relate to the iPhone, iPad, Mac or just mobile in general. Many entrepreneurs are learning to use services like Kickstarter and Indiegogo to get early-stage funding from the public, which provides a ton of creative independence compared to traditional models. That said, we've got a role to play in getting the word out about promising products that are coming down the pipe, since it often means that you fine readers can get some pretty cool stuff at a good price (provided that it might take awhile to actually ship). So, let's dig into our first p…

The most frequently accessed apps on my Mac, and why they're there as of February, 2014 Rene's recent What's on Rene's iPad right now! post inspired me to do my own, and as the resident Mac guy, I'm spinning mine in a slightly different direction — here's what's on my Mac dock instead. The left side of my dock is pretty much bone-stock, but it's not because of neglect - I actually use those apps quite frequently. Launchpad is a great way to locate applications I've installed on my hard drive quickly and easily; I regularly access the Mac App Store to find great new apps and games to download; Mail is my go-to e-mail app, and Mission Control is quite handy to quickly…

Threes!, a new math-based puzzle game from Asher Vollmer, Greg Wohlwend, and Jimmy Hinson has no ads, no in-app purchases, and no glitchy, flappy, freaking birds! The gist of Threes! is simple — swipe the screen to bring up number tiles, and keep swiping combine ones and twos to make threes, and combine pairs of numbers three and above to add them together into a single, higher value tile. Of course, every time you swipe you create more tiles, so you have to combine them just as fast, if not faster. That's because, if the screen fills up, your game is done. Threes! is hooked into Game Center so you get leaderboards achievements and all the other trimmings. Mostl…

For as long as Apple has been selling iPhones, people have been scalping them. What makes this particular story interesting is that it's not simply buying in one place and selling higher in another. This is buying and using as pseudo-currency or barter for goods and services. In other words, iPhone-as-money. Vernon Silver, Businessweek: I’ve been paying my bills with iPhones. Not with apps or on bank sites—I’ve been using the Apple (AAPL) hardware as currency. It started by accident in December, during a business trip to New York. I live in Rome, where domestic work comes cheap and technology is expensive. An unlocked, gold, 32-gigabyte iPhone 5s that costs about…

If you haven't grabbed Flappy Bird from the App Store yet and you're wondering what all the fuss is about, you better grab it soon. Developer Dong Nguyen says that he's done with all the attention the app is getting and he's pulling it offline within the next 24 hours. Nguyen, through his Twitter account, said that he's done with Flappy Bird. The game inexplicably rose to the top of the App Store charts after word got out about it - the simple gameplay has you navigate a bird through a maze of pipes by tapping the screen to flap its wings. Each flap makes the bird rise, and the challenge is in keeping the bird from hitting the pipes above or below with each flap. Ng…

Shopping lists and reminders are easily shared between iPhones with the stock Reminders app. That means adding something to a shopping list on one iPhone automatically updates it on the other person's. While this is a great option if both parties use iPhones, what if one of them uses Android? That's exactly the question one reader asked us. He currently uses an iPhone while his wife is sporting an Android. They want to be able to share lists and notes with one another but aren't quite sure what the best solution is. Luckily, there are some awesome third party apps that are available for both iPhone and Android that do just that. Here are my suggestions... Wunderlist …

DRACOdesign makes high-end aluminum bumpers for the iPhone, and the new Ventare A is no exception. It sports two gold-colored aluminum side panels and two plastic caps, the bottom of which sports Ducati branding. It offers great quality, minimal radio interference, and since it's gold — it's the only acceptable color! Just like all of Draco's cases, and aluminum bumpers in general, you unscrew the case, insert your iPhone, and screw it back in. So, yes, you need to be committed. Smartly, the hex screw driver that comes with it is also a stylus, and multi-tasking tools are always a bonus. There's also a Ducati branded neck strap included as well. The fit and finish a…

Back in November, the legendary Don Melton sat down with me to record Vector 22: transcoding video, all about getting the best-possible results for personal use. Don was kind enough to formalize some scripts to help move media from Blu-Ray/DVD to MP4 format, namely, "transcode video file" and "detect crop". Well, Don's now updated both to version 2.0: Both 2.0 video transcoding scripts now accept a complete disc image directory as input, and neither depends on mediainfo anymore. Startup time for transcode-video.sh is now ~10x faster. (Oh, if I could only speed up the actual transcoding by that factor. :) A few more bugs are now fixed, e.g. failure to transcode MPEG …

I am trying to set up a basic cloud workspace environment that consists of a work station (probably windows 7, but maybe Linux based), and then a virtual network attached storage device/ file share that the users will share data from. Originally I was looking at freeNAS which I had trouble with, and have since been advised that it has comparability issues with HyperV. Just wondering if anyone can recommend an alternative? Unlike the experience of a few others, my recent upgrade to Mavericks has ended up fine, with a clean re-installation dealing with what had been an abysmally sluggish performance following a simple upgrade - apart from a minor problem with my imported Mail backup (and once I'd been shown where my User Library folders were hidden): What are the 'alien' folders that have nested themselves beneath my subject folders? For example, "Extended warranties" in the attached illustration: Nested bumph.pdf The "Messages" folder(s) contain, between them, duplicates of the emails in my subject folders; though sometimes they are all found in the first "Messages" folder, in which c…

I have been running MS Office 2011 for Home and Student on my MacBookPro (OS 10.6.8 ) without any problems. Now all of a sudden, for no apparent reason, it crashes when I start, Excel, Word, or PowerPoint. I have uninstalled the program and reinstalled it three times using the following instructions from this link as well as read threads with others having the same issue but I can't seem to fix it.. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2398768 After each uninstall, I did a startup from my Install CD and ran Disk Repair and Repair Permissions before reinstalling MS Office. Permissions and Disk Repair stated everything was fine and no problems found. When I click on Word o…
