Once I get a base Windows 7 only image to actually deploy to a new box (I have a question about that in another thread) can someone tell me how to do add on images? I get the impression that I can install Microsoft Office for example and then grab an image of just that install and then create and image that just adds that application(s) to my base image that I store as part of one master image but with a different index. Is this correct? How does it grab just the newly installed files and changed operating system files and place it on a new box? I see this as a snapshot capturing process and yet I am not sure that is true. How are add on images done that are for …

I am trying to get a working solution for imaging our Windows 7 and 8 boxes. We have Intel bios and Intel UEFI boxes. We do not have a Micorsoft network or active directory so WDS is not an option. I have made several WinPE 4 and 5 boot usb sticks and they work. I can pull an image from the box and upload it to a share or external usb drive using ImageX, Dism, and GimageX. So far what I have had very very very limited success with is getting the computer with the new image to boot after getting imaged. Just today I ran across a thread elsewhere that included using "BCDBoot.exe x:\windows /s e:" where E is the drive letter of the newly imaged drive. Th…

I purchased a CineRaid Hard Drive enclosure. This is just a box that is connected to my computer via USB3 and allows me to hot swap sata drives. Each time I shutdown and start up those drives disappear under my computer. I then have to go into computer management tool and reassign them a drive letter. Tech support says they have never had this issue before. Can anyone tell me if I am missing a setting or something that might help this issue. They will also disappear if I hot swap them or if I unplug any USB 3 device. Thank you in advance for your help and insights. By the way these drives are not raided together. I am running in an approved "normal" mode that allows…

I have been trying to install Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit on my PC that had Windows XP. I get the BSOD with the following message when trying to install Windows 7: STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} with a status of 0x00000000 (0xc0000001 0x001003f0) However, you need to know the previous history. I was having problems with Outlook Express sending emails and very slow browser opening websites that was the subject of a previous post. After trying all suggestions found on the internet and one through this community, I got nowhere. So I decided to re-install Windows XP after backing up all documents, favourites etc to an external hard drive using a CD with the I…

I recently disabled Windows Defender because I have a better antivirus program on my laptop and do not want any redundant programs draining my computer's resources. Anyway, my problem is I am still receiving the updates for Windows Defender, which itself is not a problem, because I want my other Windows updates to continue. But I would just like to know how one may selectively choose not to update Defender (if this is possible) and get rid of the update notice that keeps popping up in my system tray. Thank you. Brand new HP laptop, running W8.1 64, not yet connected to internet. Uninstalled trial McAfee, then ran their special uninstall tool as well. W Defender not (even) appearing in Services, & unable to turn on in Action Center, despite being able to see all program files in Explorer. Defender also greyed out in Control Panel, which says Application not found. Tried: 1) double clicking file MSASCui.exe - says "WDef has been stopped, etc" 2) running sc Start WinDefend Enable in Command Line - no use, "cant find file" 3) in Services, stopping then re-starting Security Center service - no use, despite its apparent use for other members of this F…

On 2 20, 2014 I received a phone call from someone who stated they a Microsoft Tech and that they were getting a report from my computer that it was infected with a malware virus that was corrupting all my files. They wanted me to turn on my computer and allow them to show me how my computer is being infected. They asked if I was operating the Windows system. I refused. They gave me some weird story about how my computer could get infected from between the internet connection and someplace else. Very strange story on how the computers become infected and how they could show me things if I let them into my system. I told them they couldn't do anything unless I receiv…

I have carried out a full scan with MSE on my Windows XP desktop and was informed that not all the potential threats could be removed and that I should therefore repeat the scan with Defender to remove the threat. I downloaded Defender (from another computer) but it won't run on my XP desktop because Microsoft client protection is running. How do I overcome this and why is MSE advising me to run a program that will not run? Continue reading...

I need a program to make fixed labels. I don't need "mail merge" stuff, just the same contents replicated, say, 30 times on, say, a sheet of Avery 5960 labels. I know how to do it once using Word, maybe even using Pages or Address Book. But then I might need to change the label, and I don't want to have to make the change 30 times - just once. Also I would prefer to avoid the Avery online stuff. Does anyone know of something that might do what I need? Continue reading...

I'm interested in increasing the resolution of my command line (ie before I start X). I used to know how on the "old" grub, using framebuffers and stuff. But I'm brand new to using grub2, which has a different configuration method. I've also heard that most new graphics cards have framebuffer support built in, and enabling it in software will cause problems (My card is 4 years old...). Can anyone explain how you'd go about changing your command line resolution in the "modern" era? Or at least point me in the right direction? Thanks. Continue reading...

I built two RHEL 6.5 servers that will have Oracle DBs running on them. I created a udev-disk file in /etc/udev/rules.d/ that includes the scsi ids, user/group ownership, devices names, etc. After I was done I ran partprobe and start_udev. All is good, devices names show under /dev with the correct permissions. Problem, after reboot, disk devices show root:root as the owners. I then run command start_udev and then correct permissions appear, in this case oracle:oracle. How do I fix this issue? Or can't I? THanks. Continue reading...

So I'm going round and round in circles and not getting anywhere. I'm trying to to get duply to back up a whole load of folders across my hdd starting at / to a backup NAS that I have in my LAN. I want this to be automated and run rough cron so obviously need to use a keychain and ssh-keyless login so that when duply uses ssh and rsync to copy the data across to the backup NAS it's not held up asking for a password login. What I'm getting in a pickle with is that in order to backup all the files via duply I need to run the command with root privileges otherwise it fails because it can't access files using the normal user. But whenever I generate ssh-key it generat…
