I do not use any antivirus software other than microsoft security essentials. I tried deleting all the files and folders in the /SoftwareDistribution/Download folder and it is still not working. I have an HP Pavilion running Windows 8. I started it in Safe Mode and did a Clean Boot in attempt to fix the error "Failed to Connect to a Windows Service" that I'd been receiving on startup. After disabling the programs in MSConfig, I restarted in normal mode. I didn't receive the "Failed to Connect" error message, and went to restore my settings after the clean boot, but can no longer access or find MSConfig. If I search for it, there are simply no results. This happens both in Safe Mode and in my normal desktop. Does anyone have any advice? Thank you. Continue reading...

When one searches for a reason for the blue screen "Service system exception" failure online 14 pages of incidents show on these pages - of course no one dies because of the blue screen - though many of us have been close to having a stroke as the system simply fails to reboot as promised. And yet MS makes no official statement about what is clearly a software problem with their operating system. The arrogance is breathtaking. Unfortunately MS 8 also makes it extra difficult to install Linux OS - which is what I will do as soon as I can get technical help from my son. Continue reading...

Hello everyone.. I'm trying to run the "powercfg /batteryreport" command on my system (HP Probook 4540s, Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit) but it keeps returning "Invalid Parameters" error. When I issue the command "powercfg /?", the output is cut short so I can only see commands that start with 'c' downwards. Now I've tried this also on 3 other systems running windows 7 and got the same error.. But it works fine on windows 8 PC.. Any help would be so much appreciated. Continue reading...

I have two PC's, one running W7 and one running Vista and on both I have had Windows Update set to "notify" when updates become available. Yesterday by chance (as it was outside the normal monthly update time slot) I noticed an update as available but I left it until this morning to see what it was. On checking, I found an update had been installed silently today... puzzled I checked my Windows Update settings... and found they had been altered to automatically install updates. I checked my Vista PC. This to has had the settings changed to install automatically, although the update history here shows nothing recently installed apart from MSE definition updates.…

I am running an Asus laptop under Windows 7. I have two issues. I cannot dowload any files using IE9 and I am unable to install Service Pack1. I have tried to download IE10 using the Chrome browser but it wont install as the installer says it needs service pack 1 installed. I have created a new user and this has fixed the problem with downloading files with IE. I have tried installing SP1 from a downloaded file on a DVD but when I run the setup progrma I get an hourglass on the screen and nothing further hapens. I have disabled the Windows Firewall and unloaded the Avast virus checker and tried to install SP1 again but I get the same error. …

Hi, Honestly, I do not believe so much in independent testing labs. I believe my own testing. However, I could see that Windows Defender has a low-to-average detection rates whenever I am downloading new malware packs. Of course I know that WIndows has ELAM, UAC, and Smart Screen. But, is Windows Defender enough for daily computing and regular surfing? Or should I try other AV? Thanks. Continue reading...

I have a severe threat level (19th Feb) with Trojan:Win32\Kovter.c being found by MSE and supposedly removed but each time I tick the box and ask for total removal (by the way the Remove button is not highlighted but the "dont remove "button is highlighted), the thing is found again after a quick scan. Even wondering if the box that comes up asking what I want MSE to do is really part of MSE and not a fake? If I don't request complete removal the quick scan usually says "clean". Then I do a full scan and back it comes. Is this beyond MSE capabilities to remove as thinking of d/loading Malwarebytes. Have in recent times had exploitjava/CVE-2013-0422 but think that h…

As soon as the Windows February 2014 update was installed on my computer, WIndows Defender no longer stayed on after a restart. Now, every time, I get a action center warning about my computer not being secure. Its a minor inconvenience. There are no other changes to the software set on my computer I haven't installed anything new in February. I have only Malware Bytes installed as extra software, and it ran together with windows defender for many months until the feb 2014 update, and windows defender always stayed on after restarting. Malware Bytes hasn't been updated since last year. I have searched everywhere in security settings and Windows Defender setting for …

My outlook mail is a mess. My mail folders and local folders separate all the time. My local folders will list separately on the left of the page with a kahki color background?? The mail page slides, never did this before?? When I open mail, it opens on a send/rec message page?? It use to open on bottom pane only when clicked? Also, I tried compacting offline, it stops in the middle, and whatever folder is being compacted disappears. I did this three times with no results....no going to compact again, I will lose my folders. It's a mess, even though I still receive mail?? Continue reading...

On my Windows XP Tablet Edition pc I've tried over and over to Run or Save/Run the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 update and it continues to fail. I first was notified that it had failed to update automatically today. But then even my persistant trials have failed. I even downloaded and Saved the file to my Desktop and then tried to run it. I always get the same Error. I've attached a PrintScreen of the Error I get in ALL cases. I don't really want to mess with the Registry as I'm scared of making a mistake or of my computer malfunctioning in the middle of my changes and my not being able to Restore any Saved Registry backup as I don't have a clue about ho…
