It showed Real-time protection was OFF and Virus and spyware definitions were OUT OF DATE. ABC will stream the Oscars live this year via its Watch ABC app on the iPhone and iPad for certain customers. The app will also feature backstage content from the event, along with the live preshow and ceremony themselves. However, there are severe limitations on viewing this content. Watch ABC allows customers to watch live content content from ABC, but only in certain markets, and then only if they use certain cable providers. These restrictions won't be lifted for the Oscars, according to Variety: But to watch the full kudocast, you need to be lucky enough to live in the right place — and have the right pay-TV provider. The show’s livestream will be available to …

The iPhone 5s and the Samsung Galaxy S5 are going to be two of – if not the two – hottest smartphones of 2014. Or likely until Apple launches the iPhone 6 at least. There are going to be more than a few folks due upgrades, or just generally looking for a new phone that are going to be looking at choosing between these two. Especially leading up to April 11, the global availability of the Galaxy S5. It's not a 100% fair fight just yet, since we've had 5 months to get to know the iPhone 5s and a grand total of a couple of hours at a trade show with the Galaxy S5. So, maybe consider this round 1. There'll be much, much more – like software – to dive into when we actually …

Samsung's forthcoming Galaxy S5 was announced at Mobile World Congress this week and rightfully garnered a lot of attention — it's Samsung's next flagship smartphone. Among the new features one jumped out at me as something I'd love to see Apple add to iPhone 6: waterproofing. Yeah, that's right, waterproofing. Think I'm crazy? Hear me out. Now, in fairness, Samsung's not breaking any new ground here with a waterproof phone. Sony's had a waterproof Xperia smartphone out for a while (and they just introduced a followup too). Kyocera's Hydro handsets can handle water, and Samsung's own Galaxy 4 Active did that last year as well. So I'll say right up front that I don't th…

Fitness trackers have been improving steadily over the past few years, but if the latest gadget lives up to its lofty claims, they may have met their match in Moov. The newly-announced Moov fitness gadget aims to be more than just a fitness tracker, it wants to be your fitness coach. The problem with most fitness trackers is their passive nature. They simply sit on your wrist, collecting data, and leave it up to you to parse what it means. Moov, on the other hand, takes that data, relays it to your phone for processing, and uses what it knows about you and your goals coach you on exercising better. It wants you to be stronger and it wants you to be safer. Moov worked w…

Secret for iPhone is part of a new wave of social networking. Secret lets you post what's on your mind but lets you do it anonymously. Your friends can still see what you write, and the friends of your friends, and even the entire network if it becomes popular enough. You can all comment back and forth as well. Your friends just won't know you wrote it. (At least they won't be able to prove it!) Secret keeps your identity hidden behind generic avatars in an attempt to remove your inhibitions, your concerns about being judged or facing repercussions. But does it work? When you first sign up for Secret, it asks for permission to access your contacts. It claims not to sto…

I'm trying to create a USB recovery toolkit, that runs from Windows 7 booted from USB (that isn't an issue, NT6 Fast Installer, working fine and posting from it now) In doing so, I've ran out of space. I only need 60MB more space. I've tried to remove Windows features and each time it fails, I've looked at the KB article and one of the suggestions is to remove USB drives. Obviously I can't do that as it dies with an instant BSOD. Is there a manual way to remove these features? I'm not adversed to tearing chunks out of Windows as repairing this install is trivial, but at the same time a little guidance would be nice. Any knowledge on how to manually remove Wind…

My computer running Windows 7.0 (not the computer I am typing this message from), and secured by Microsoft Security Essentials appears to have been infected with a virus/phishing program that looks exactly like MS Security Essentials. The program told me I had a virus (Trojan something) and that I should click to remove. When I did so it shut off the computer and restarted with only the rogue security program that showing. when I attempted to delete it would not do so. Even if I allow it to run temporarily it requires a credit card payment to activate. I do recall that the little MS icon in the lower right corner of the screen was green but I mistakenly clicked on th…

So I know you guys are gonna love this! I have a very particular virus that I believe I picked up through me and my friends' Hamachi network (one of them must have blocked it and bounced back the LAN tunnel to me) Some issues the virus has given me in pristine bullet-point format for an easier time raging: -It has deleted my USB 3.0 hubs. I have tested this since I have a plug'n'play CoolerMaster Xornet mouse and when it plugs into the 2.0 hubs, it works, but any 3.0 hub will not work. -it messes with my damn drivers to the point where, said mouse and touchpad, could not work, even going as far as disabling intel hd graphics and turning off my display -gives startup error…

I have had several different error messages pop up to do with Office products and have four different malware and virus scanners to get rid of them. I have also used the repair option for Office, Outlook etc in the Program files. It may not be related, but one program that I have wanted to uninstall ever since it appeared is Linkey. For a start, everytime I chose "open link in a new tab" it opened a default search screen in a new tab instead. When I searched for why that was occurring I someone had suggested that it was not a safe link to open. However I do have bitDefender and it hasn't shown anything unsafe with the search results that have appeared. I also always ha…

I have requirments to build a kiosk that disables the users ability to print upon login, and then under certain circumstances enable them to print. All users will be logging in using a generic user account. This is my idea so far: I am going to use CUPS to manage printing ability and Utilize the AllowUser and DenyUser directives for print control. 1) When user logs in I want to run a script that will add that user to the DenyUser list. I want to do this every login just to ensure they didn't somehow keep their printing ability from previous login. 2) I am developing a java application that the user will run, and a potential end result of that will remove them fro…

Home Sharing is a great way to stream content from your Mac right to your Apple TV. It lets you quickly and easily get anything from the iTunes library on your desktop to the HDTV without it having to be on Apple's servers, like iTunes in the Cloud, or you having to be at your computer, like AirPlay. It's an older feature, more pull than push, but for home movies, personal video collections, ripped CDs, and more, it still works great. Here's how! How to set up and start using Apple TV Home Sharing Click on the Settings icon from the main menu of your Apple TV. Scroll down and click on Computers. Now choose Enable Home Sharing. Either enter your Apple ID when pro…

Apple has introduced a number of changes to its policies and tools to make device management better for education and business. Both business and education customers can now buy app licenses in bulk under Apple's Volume Purchase Program to install them on a large number of devices at once. Additionally, enterprise and education customers can also now employ hands-free Mobile Device Management, allowing devices to be set up wirelessly, rather than needing to physically connect to every deployed piece of hardware. Apple will now also provide Child Online Protection Act-compliant Apple IDs for students under 13 when a school district requests them. These IDs require parental…

When you're the most valuable company in the world, the most profitable company of the last three years, and the company that sells the most popular smartphone and tablet, it's no surprise that others look up to you. For the seventh year in a row, Fortune has ranked Apple as the most-admired company on the planet. You wouldn't know it from the relentlessly skeptical commentary on CNBC, the Pulitzer-prize-winning series in the New York Times, or the measly 12 times earnings Wall Street pays for its stock, but Apple is widely respected by people in the business. Apple is tops on the list, but is followed by two other tech giants: retailer Amazon.com and everythin…
