I just turned 71 years old and still have a lot to learn. I have 4 operating computers in the house, one with XP Pro, two with Vista and one with Windows 7 Pro. They are loaded with Microsoft Office 2003/2007 and OpenOffice.org. My goal is to learn enough about WHS to convert the XP unit (two 500 gig disks) into a server. I am semi-retired, doing a little consulting for the company from which I retired. Been in computers since Apple III, but I only learn enough to accomplish whatever I am working on. Maintain a few websites for friends and customers (Expression Web). Help administer a small size (2700 members) vBulletin forum. Also considering starting my own forum and ha…

  4. Was the email really from Amazon? Most of the people who forwarded it to me thought the message was suspicious. Why wouldn’t Amazon refer to them by name rather than just saying “Hello”? Why was there a link to the http (rather than https) version of Amazon’s website? How could they possibly issue an advisory like this about a security breach without offering more information about what had happened and over what time period, and where folks could find out more? Why was there no link to some kind of confirmation on Amazon’s own website? It all seemed very odd. I publicly wondered whether perhaps scammers had made a mistake by forgetting to include a link to a p…

  15. This site, like many... allows BBCode to be used for formatting posts etc. BBCodes are simply code 'tags' that you can add to your posts that allows you to change the formatting of the text. You can add 'underlines', make text bold, change colors, colors, colors etc. There are a number of ways that you can achieve this: Manual method Code 'tags' are in 2 parts... the opening 'tag' and the closing 'tag' ( you need to add both for the formatting to work) Here's a small example of 'tags': Let's see how this works in practise.. If you were to type this... Would appear like this.... This is bold Just the same with italic..... Would appear like…

Hello everyone! I hope this will be the place to get an answer. I am very new to the 2008 server family and have run in to an issue while testing a terminal server. The software I am testing is very old. It works fine on 2003 Server Standard. I have 2008 Standard installed. The issue is when I try to run a preset macro within the software (Goldmine 4.0) it does nothing. The software is launched and run from a server still running NT 4.0, no poking fun now... Like I said it works fine in 2003... Thank you in advance for any help with this. -Jesse

  18. Hi, Courtney from OutboundMusic.com here. We've just upgraded from our windows 2003 server to 2008. We're music broadcasters, and I refer to the file details often. On the 2003 server, details such as "duration" were showing on the files, but even though I am checking the box for those to show, they aren't showing on 2008. The file is the same, so I know that property is included in the file information. I'm sure it's a simple solution, but I can't figure out how to make my necessary file details show. Does anyone out there know what I need to do?

  19. Hello I am a systems administrator with 20 years experience. Administered Windows desktops and severs with Unix and Linux. Brief experience with Novell too. I have over a decades experience with Samba. At a previous employer, there were Windows Severs, but was not responsible for administering those boxes. One of the accounting packages which will be used is not supported by Linux using Samba and as such have started to work on deploying at Windows Server box at one of my locations. Doing a new install. I had no problems with Windows 2008 server up until I played around with Active Directory in an effort to get user home directories. I am going to look aroun…

My name is Bob Schwarz. I have been using Windows Server operating systems for 10 years now. I am also a beta tester for server and desktop operating systems and because of that I am an early adopter when a new operating system is released. I started Free PC Help Forum to give users of Windows 2008 Server a place to share knowledge and ideas. I own Schwarz Network. It is the home of my network of sites. My sites are mostly tech sites, but, I do have a couple off topic chat forums. Thanks to all who are members here for sharing your knowledge.

I just read that Comcast is a carrier and is as good as Verizon whose towers they use and the cost is lower with more offerings. How do you feel about this?
